Blaire Riley continued to etch her name in the Kelly softball record book Thursday.

The senior shortstop blasted her 14th-career home run in the bottom of the fourth inning against Saxony Lutheran, tying Marissa Worth for the Kelly career home run record.

“It was really crazy,” Riley said. “I went from hitting just one my sophomore year, with that being my first ever in high school, to having six home runs last year. Now this is my seventh this year. My hitting just really transformed and my confidence level has completely flipped. I just go up there with the mentality to hit and it all works out well for me.”

Riley went 1-for-3 at the plate in Kelly’s 6-1 win over the Crusaders, with her lone hit of the evening being a monumental one. With 11 games remaining in the regular season, Riley is right on track to shatter the milestone and become Kelly softball’s all-time home run leader.

“Typically you would think she might be in our cleanup spot or hitting third because she is our best hitter,” head coach Melanie Hearing said. “But when we have her in that leadoff spot she has more at bats, she sees the ball more, she does better for us, so she kind of starts things off for us in our lineup. She's had an amazing year and I just hope she continues to.”

Along with Riley’s historic outing, pitcher Alexis Wilson tossed a complete game to help the Lady Hawks extend their winning streak to four games.

Wilson was charged with one run on six hits with four strikeouts to continue her recent domination on the mound.

“We brought her in situations where she's had to come in as a reliever, but she does better starting the game for us,” Heuring said. “She's building her stamina up. This is the third game she's gone all seven innings for us, so she's doing a real good job.”

Kelly’s entire lineup was able to take advantage once again behind 12 hits while scoring at least five runs for the fourth game in-a-row and snatching the 10th win of the season.

Senior catcher Madyson Johnson went 3-for-4 on the day, while senior outfielders Miley Estes and Gwen Essner each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Saxony’s lone run came from an Ansley Palisch RBI double in the top of the second.

Riley believes that her and her Lady Hawk teammates are more than capable of continuing to exceed expectations over the next few weeks.

“We have so much potential,” she said. “We are so young and no one really had faith in us until this season started and we really got rolling. Now, I think we’re on such a good streak and I hope we can get this fifth win tomorrow.”

Kelly will aim to keep the momentum rolling in a road test at Doniphan tomorrow, Sept. 20. The Donettes defeated the Lady Hawks 12-1 at Notre Dame Softballfest two weeks back.

Saxony Lutheran travels to Neelyville for a 4:30 pm game on Monday, Sept. 23.
