STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. - The Kennett Indians traveled up north to face the Ste. Genevieve Dragons, a fellow MSHSAA Class 3 District 1 opponent.

A lack of starters and injuries plagued the Indians for their third game of the season. Senior quarterback Caleb Duncan was benched with a foot injury along with Logan Decker who suffered an elbow injury in the last matchup against Paragould.

In place of Duncan, Ty Jones stepped up as the starting quarterback for the Indians.

The Dragons got off to a strong lead, finding the end zone twice during the first half in the pouring rain.

Their first touchdown came halfway through the first quarter while the second was scored three minutes into the second quarter.

Kennett’s offense did force the ball into Ste. Genevieve’s red zone in the first half, but were unable to score a touchdown.

The Indians were able to spoil both of the extra point conversions on those plays to keep the competition within reach, only trailing 12-0.

Kevin Thompson led the defensive stance against the Dragons with five tackles in the first half. He finished with 7 tackles on the night.

Ste. Genevieve scored their third touchdown of the night 10 seconds out of the half time break. Then another rush into the end zone with two minutes left in the third quarter extended the lead to 26-0.

With two minutes left in the game, Kennett made a series of runs to get within the one yard line of their end zone. Sophomore Nick Fonda capitalized on this effort to score the first Indian touchdown of the game. He cut the score down to 26-6 with his first touchdown of the season. However, it was too late to attempt a comeback for the Indians.

With this loss, Kennett will now fall to 0-3 on the season while Ste. Genevieve will secure their second win of the season. The Dragons record is now 2-1.

Next, the Indians will travel to play at Kelly for their second of three back-to-back road games. The game against Kelly will be on Friday, Sep. 20 at 7 p.m.
