SIKESTON — As the season gets underway, tennis fans in Sikeston are eagerly awaiting the Lady Bulldogs’ first match.

However, due to a tornado that damaged their home courts in May, fans won’t be able to see the team in any home matches this season.

Despite this unfortunate setback, the team remains determined to make the most of the upcoming campaign and showcase their progress and skills.

“They’ve worked hard all summer long,” said coach Lynne DeWitt. “Hopefully, we win more matches and make a big improvement this year.”

DeWitt, who previously coached the Lady Bulldogs before retiring and taking a hiatus, returned to the team before last season. This season marks her second year at the helm, and her first with a full offseason to prepare the team.

The coach said the team’s biggest strength was the newfound camaraderie, which she attributes to a combination of factors. The team has spent more time together outside of practice, fostering stronger bonds and creating a supportive environment.

Additionally, DeWitt emphasized the importance of positive reinforcement and motivation, which has helped to build the players’ confidence and create a more cohesive unit.

“We’re more of a team this year,” she said. “They’re cheering each other, helping and encouraging each other, and holding each other accountable if they do something wrong.”

Senior Kinsley Brandon, who has made significant strides in her game, is poised to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the No. 1 singles position.

Brandon made a significant jump from last year, moving from the No. 7 spot to the top spot.

“She never stopped practicing when last season ended,” DeWitt said. “Her biggest strengths are her mental game and forehand. But it’s all improved.”

Joining Brandon in the lineup is sophomore Ruby Sullivan, a newcomer to the team who will start the season at the No. 2 spot. Sullivan joined the team after being persuaded by her mother and friends.

Rounding out the top four singles players are junior Cheyenne Parker and senior Juliet Collins, both of whom return to the team after competing on the varsity squad last season.

“Both are pretty consistent with a good net game,” DeWitt said. “They cover a lot of ground.”

At the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, are seniors Selah Torres and Alanna Jones. Both players bring valuable leadership and experience to the team.

“The team’s dedication to improvement has been impressive,” DeWitt concluded. “They’ve put in countless hours, refining their technique and technical skills. Despite the challenges and difficult circumstances they’ve faced, the team has shown resilience and determination. Their growth is a direct result of their hard work.”

Sikeston will begin its season at the Cape Central Tournament on Friday, August 30.
